Note: Painting technique whereby tones and hues are obtained by applying regular small dots or touches of unmixed pigment on the canvas so that they combine optically. The French critic Félix Fénéon coined the term "peinture au point" in 1886 after seeing Seurat's "La Grande Jatte." Paul Signac offered the alternative term of "divisionism" in his book "D'Eugène Delacroix au Néo-Impressionnisme (1899), although in modern usage "pointillism" is reserved for the technique involving dots applied in a controlled manner, while "divisionism" refers to use of marks of unmixed color in Italian painters’ works.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Schildertechniek waarbij tinten en kleurschakeringen ontstaan door het regelmatig aanbrengen van kleine stippen ongemengd pigment op het canvas, zodat ze voor het oog in elkaar overvloeien. De term ‘pointillisme’ verwijst alleen naar de techniek, terwijl ‘neo-impressionisme’ verwijst naar zowel de door Georges Seurat ontwikkelde stijl als de daaruit voortkomende beweging die tussen 1886 en 1906 zijn bloeiperiode had. Seurat zelf gaf de voorkeur aan de term 'chromo-luminarism', waaruit blijkt dat hij zowel licht- als kleureffecten wilde intensiveren. De Franse criticus Félix Fénéon bedacht de term 'peinture au point' in 1886 na het zien van Seurat's 'La Grande Jatte'. Paul Signac stelde de alternatieve term 'divisionisme' voor in zijn boek 'D'Eugène Delacroix au Néo-Impressionnisme' (1899). 
Spanish ..... Técnica de pintura en la cual los tonos y matices se obtienen aplicando sobre la tela pequeñas superficies de pigmento sin mezclar, de manera que se combinen ópticamente. Para el estilo específico asociado en particular con Seurat, úsese "Neoimpresionista”.
