Note: Buildings or devices with sails or vanes that turn in the wind and generate power. The devices operate by means of a rotating shaft on which sails are mounted or placed at an angle so that the force of wind against them causes rotation, which in turn produced energy. Windmills were historically used chiefly in flat districts for operating a mill to grind grain or pump water; the older and most characteristic European form consists of a conical mill-house with a dome or cap supporting four sails. Modern devices tap the wind to produce electricity by using a disk of sails mounted on a framework.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指用來開發風力的設備，一般來說也指用來維護或置放此設備的建築物或結構物。特徵上來看，此裝備運轉的方式，是利用架置在轉軸上的翼板，將翼板調整至一特殊角度，以讓風力能推動翼板，使轉軸旋轉，藉此動作產生能源。風車傳統上大部分是用在平坦的地區，藉著粉碎機的運轉來磨碎穀物、抽水或發電。老式且最典型的歐式風車，還包括圓錐形的磨坊屋，其上有圓頂或圓蓋以維護風車的四塊翼板；而現代的美式風車，其翼板則圍成圓盤狀，架置在研磨機上，大部分是用來打水和切割物品。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een mechanisme voor het effectief benutten van windenergie; verwijst meestal ook naar het gebouw waarin het mechanisme is ondergebracht of de structuur die het mechanisme draagt. Kenmerkend voor het mechanisme is de roterende as waarop wieken zijn aangebracht, al dan niet in een hoek, waarbij de windkracht de wieken tot draaien brengt om aldus energie op te wekken. De moderne Amerikaanse vorm bestaat uit een schijf met wieken op een raamwerk van onderslagen, en wordt meestal gebruikt om een pomp of zaag aan te drijven. |
