Record Type: concept
daxophones (friction idiophones, idiophones, ... Furnishings and Equipment (hierarchy name))

Note: Experimental musical instruments in the friction idiophone family invented by Hans Reichel ca. 1980s. These are made of wood, and consist of a 'tongue' that is fixed in a block that contains one or more contact microphones. The tongue is bowed with a conventional stringed instrument bow while simultaneously pressing down on the the tongue with another piece of shaped wood called a 'dax,' thus achieving various tonalities or notes. The tongue can also be excited by plucking. The shape of the tongue, and the type of wood also influence the sound.
