Note: Areas of cities or towns that are residential or more prosperous areas, but still remaining within the central urban boundaries, not the suburbs. The term is thought to derive from these areas, in historic times, having been laid out radiating away from the older business center, thus having higher street numbers than the older areas; alternatively, the term may derive from the development of New York City, where the historical newer residential sections were in the north of Manhattan Island, at the top of a map. |

Dutch ..... Welvarende woonwijken in steden, maar die wel nog binnen de grenzen van de centrale stad liggen, dus geen buitenwijken. De Engelse term 'uptown' is mogelijk ontstaan doordat deze delen buiten de oudere winkelcentra zijn aangelegd en daarom hogere huisnummers hadden; de term kan ook zijn afgeleid van de ontwikkeling van de stad New York, waar de historische nieuwere woongedeelten in het noorden van het eiland Manhattan liggen, boven aan de kaart. |
