Note: Components of modern sewage-treatment systems where waste water is passed through a series of tanks following coarse screening to remove large objects. Grit chambers settle out sand and cinders; primary settling tanks remove heavy organic solids; and aeration tanks mix the incoming sewage with activated, bacteria-rich sludge and fine air bubbles, causing the rapid oxidation of organic matter. Final settling tanks remove the remaining suspended solids from the mixture.

| Dutch ..... Onderdeel van moderne rioolwaterzuiveringsinstallaties waarin afvalwater door een aantal tanks wordt geleid nadat de grotere objecten eruit zijn gehaald. In zandvangers haalt men eerst zand en kleideeltjes uit het water. Vervolgens worden in voorbezinktanks grotere organische deeltjes verwijderd. In beluchtingstanks wordt zuurstof toegevoegd en tevens aerobe micro-organismen, die het overgebleven organische materiaal snel afbreken. In nabezinktanks worden ten slotte de resterende zwevende vaste deeltjes uit het water gehaald. |
