Note: Refers to the art and certain artifacts of small-scale societies, even when the societies are not strictly speaking tribal in social structure. The rubric is typically applied to works of Native Americans, Oceania, and sub-Saharan Africa. The characteristics that define creators of tribal art are 1. isolation, politically and economically, from advanced civilizations; 2. oral traditions in rather than literacy; 3. small, independent population groupings, usually in villages of no more than a few hundred inhabitants who live a life of face-to-face social interaction and informal social control; 4. a low level of labor and craft specialization; 5. subsistence by hunting, fishing, and gathering and/or small-scale agriculture; 6. little technology beyond hand tools, often of stone rather than metal; and 7. slow rates of cultural change prior to European contact. |

Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de kunst en bepaalde artefacten van kleinschalige gemeenschappen. Met deze categorie bedoelt men meestal het werk van Native Americans en inwoners van Oceanië en Afrika ten zuiden de Sahara. Makers van inheemse kunst zijn als volgt te definiëren: 1. ze zijn politiek en economisch geïsoleerd van geavanceerde beschavingen; 2. ze maken gebruik van mondelinge overlevering en niet van schriftelijke; 3. ze leven in kleine, onafhankelijke bevolkingsgroepen, meestal in dorpen met niet meer dan een paar honderd inwoners in een sfeer van persoonlijke sociale interactie en informele sociale controle; 4. ze hebben een laag arbeidsniveau en weinig ambachtelijke specialisatie; 5. ze voorzien in hun levensonderhoud door jacht, visserij, het verzamelen van eetbare producten en/of kleinschalige landbouw; 6. ze gebruiken weinig technologie, behalve handgereedschap, vaak van steen en niet van metaal, en 7. culturele veranderingen verliepen traag tot het contact met Europeanen. |

A rubrica é normalmente aplicada a obras de nativos americanos, da Oceania e da África Subsaariana.
