saggar firing (firing (technique), temperature-related techniques, ... Processes and Techniques (hierarchy name)) |
|
Note: Refers to a firing method in which vessels are placed inside a protective container known as a saggar prior to firing. The saggar shields the vessels from ash, debris, and temperature fluctuations, producing cleaner surfaces and higher success rates. A saggar generally results in finer quality compared to wares fired without it. In Korea, the method was primarily employed for high-quality wares during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, and was considered so luxurious that it was prohibited by sumptuary regulations during the Joseon period. |
