Note: Refers to the offices, reigns, or dominions of caliphs. The caliphate, a political-religious state, became a Muslim institution after the death of Muhammad in 632. Through conquest the caliphate grew rapidly for the first few hundred years but ultimately ceased to exist after the defeat of Baghdad by the Mongols in 1258. Even when declining in power, the caliphate remained a symbolic focus of Muslim unity and there have been attempts to revive it.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指伊斯蘭國王哈里發的職務、統治時期或領地。哈里發國是政教合一國家；穆罕默德於西元632年逝世後，成為一種伊斯蘭的制度。經由征服擴張，哈里發制度在最初的數百年間發展迅速，直到蒙古於西元1258年時攻下巴格達後，哈里發制度才告終結。即使勢力逐漸衰退，哈里發制度仍是代表伊斯蘭團結一致的象徵，因此曾有人試圖振興此制度。

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de functies, regeerperioden of domeinen van kaliefen. Het kalifaat, een politiek-religieuze staat, groeide na de dood van Mohammed in 632 uit tot een mosliminstituut. Door veroveringen groeide het kalifaat de eerste eeuwen snel in omvang, maar na de overwinning van de Mongolen bij Bagdad, in 1258, hield het op te bestaan.
