Note: Protein substance spun by spiders as thin, uniform filaments to make webs, other structures, conveyance, or to capture prey. A strand of spider silk is about 25 micrometers (0.00001 inches) in diameter. It is strong and dimensionally stable. Hummingbirds and other animals use spider silk for nest-building. Spider silk is currently used for crosshairs in optical instruments. Attempts have been made to produce fabric from spider silk, but it took an enormous number of spider webs and work to produce a fabric that was so sheer that it was of little use.

| Dutch ..... Proteïnesubstantie die door spinnen in de vorm van dunne, uniforme filamenten wordt gesponnen voor webben of andere structuren, voor transport of om prooi te vangen. Een draad spinrag heeft een diameter van ongeveer 25 micrometer (0,025 mm). Spinrag is sterk en dimensionaal stabiel. Kolibries en andere dieren gebruiken spinrag voor hun nest. Spinrag wordt tegenwoordig gebruikt voor het dradenkruis in optische instrumenten. Er zijn pogingen gedaan om textiel te produceren van spinrag, maar het kostte een enorme hoeveelheid spinnenwebben en werk om een stof te produceren, die bovendien zo dun was dat hij weinig nut had. |
