Note: Choreographed dressage performances by mounted riders and typically set to music, particularly popular in Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. It grew out of cavalry maneuvers and Medieval tournaments. Equestrian ballets were performed outdoors or in large arenas. Costumed horsemen rode horses in patterns and conducted intricate maneuvers, including leaps and acrobatics. One of the earliest known equestrian ballets was performed in Paris for the wedding of the Duc de Joyeuse in 1581.

| Dutch ..... Vorm van dressuur met choreografie die door ruiters wordt uitgevoerd, meestal op muziek; was heel populair in Europa in de 16e tot de 18e eeuw. Paardenballet was oorspronkelijk geïnspireerd op cavaleriemanoeuvres en middeleeuwse toernooien. Uitvoeringen vonden buiten of in grote arena's plaats. Ruiters in kostuum voerden patronen en ingewikkelde manoeuvres uit met hun paarden, waaronder sprongen en acrobatische kunsten. Voor zover bekend is een van de eerste paardenballetten in Parijs uitgevoerd ter ere van het huwelijk van de hertog van Joyeuse in 1581. |
