Note: Processions celebrating military victories. Primary examples were the large spectacles surrounding the procession of the Roman army entering the city by a dedicated gate, accompanied by captured leaders, slaves, and booty of the conquered. Later use of the phrase connotes any procession celebrating victory as is common in allegorical and symbolic visual art, especially since the Renaissance.

| Dutch ..... Optochten waarmee militaire overwinningen worden gevierd. Belangrijke voorbeelden waren de grote spektakels rondom het Romeinse leger dat de stad binnentrok door een speciale poort, samen met gevangen genomen aanvoerders, slaven en buit van de overwonnenen. Later werd triomftocht ook gebruikt voor elke zegetocht. Het thema van de triomftocht, triomf of overwinning is veelvoorkomend in de allegorische en symbolische beeldende kunst, vooral sinds de renaissance. Daarbij verplaatste de nadruk van het militaire aspect van hedendaagse personen naar de viering van het verleden en naar een benadering van het alledaagse leven. |
