Note: Wooden sculptures made and used by the Buluñits people of central coastal Guinea, in the form of a long, beaked head mounted upon a long, thin neck mounted on a spherical base; the heads may be carved in the shape of human heads or those of birds, crocodiles, horned animals, or D'mba figures. They are used primarily as shrine figures representing both the supreme god and the lineage protector; other uses include as dance headdresses and as divination objects for various rituals such as male and female initiation ceremonies, harvest and healing rituals, and judicial and funerary ceremonies. |

Dutch ..... Houten beeldhouwwerken, gemaakt en gebruikt door de Baga-Bulunits in de centrale kuststreek van Guinee. Ze hebben de vorm van een lange kop met een snavel op een lange, dikke hals die op een bol voetstuk staat; de hoofden kunnen gesneden zijn in de vorm van mensenhoofden of de koppen van vogels, krokodillen, gehoornde dieren of nimbafiguren. Ze worden voornamelijk als schrijnfiguren gebruikt en stellen zowel de oppergod als de beschermer van het voorgeslacht voor; ze worden ook gebruikt als hoofdtooi bij dansen en als waarzeggerijvoorwerp bij verschillende rituelen, zoals mannelijke en vrouwelijke initiatieceremonies, oogst- en genezingsrituelen, rechtszaken en begrafenissen. |

Esculturas de madeira feitas e usadas pelo povo Buluñits da costa central da Guiné, na forma de uma cabeça longa e pontuda sobre um pescoço fino e longo em uma base esférica; as cabeças podem ser esculpidas no formato de cabeças humanas ou de pássaros, crocodilos, animais com chifre ou figuras D'mba. Elas são usadas principalmente como figuras de santuário que representam o deus supremo e o protetor da linhagem; outros usos incluem cocares de dança e objetos de divinação para vários rituais como cerimônias de iniciação feminina e masculina, rituais de colheita e cura, bem como rituais e cerimônias funerárias e judiciais. |

Esculturas de madera realizadas y usadas por los Buluñits, pueblo de la costa central de Guinea, con la forma de una cabeza larga con un pico en un cuello largo y delgado, que es montado sobre una base esférica; las cabezas pueden ser talladas con forma de cabezas humanas o esas aves, cocodrilos, animales con cuernos o figuras D'mba. Son usados principalmente como figuras de templos que representan al dios supremo y el linaje protector; otros usos incluyen su empleo como tocados para danzas y como objetos de adivinación para varios rituales como las ceremonias de iniciación masculinas y femeninas, rituales de cosecha y sanación y para ceremonias judiciales y funerarias. |
