Note: A term historically applied in a general sense to the trade carried on between ports of the same country as distinguished from that carried on with foreign ports. Also called intercoastal navigation. According to the laws of some maritime nations, the term is also applied to the trade carried within the geographical limits of the foreign trade. The modern term "short sea shipping" refers to the movement of cargo and passengers mainly by sea along a coast, without crossing an ocean. |

Dutch ..... Oorspronkelijk de handelsvaart over zee langs de kust of zoveel mogelijk in het zicht daarvan, van haven naar haven. Het is de oudste vorm van zeevaart. In Europa rekent men sedert het midden van de 19de eeuw de zeevaart tussen alle kusten gelegen tussen Archangel en de Zwarte Zee tot kustvaart. |
