Note: Theorized by French curator and critic Nicolas Bourriaud in the late 1990s, relational art describes a set of art practices in which the production of human relations and their social context are privileged over a discrete, portable, autonomous work. The artist, acting as a facilitator, establishes spaces, situations, or "platforms" designed to host social activities and information exchange between audience participants. Participatory in nature, a relational work emphasizes the social interactions created by the installation or event and conceives the audience as a community. Key practitioners include Liam Gillick, Pierre Huyghe, Maurizio Cattelan, Carsten Höller, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

| Dutch ..... Het concept 'relationele kunst' is eind jaren negentig van de 20e eeuw ontwikkeld door de Franse conservator en criticus Nicolas Bourriaud. Het staat voor een verzameling kunstpraktijken waarin menselijke relaties en hun sociale context de voorrang krijgen boven een losstaand, draagbaar, autonoom werk. De kunstenaar treedt op als facilitator en schept ruimten, situaties of 'platformen' voor sociale activiteiten en de uitwisseling van informatie tussen publieksdeelnemers. Een relationeel werk heeft een participatiekarakter en benadrukt de sociale interacties die door de installatie of het evenement tot stand worden gebracht. Een relationeel werk vat het publiek op als een gemeenschap. Belangrijke beoefenaars zijn Liam Gillick, Pierre Huyghe, Maurizio Cattelan, Carsten Höller en Rirkrit Tiravanija. |
