Note: Greek state religious festival that honored Athena. It was eventually celebrated every fourth year with great splendor, probably in deliberate rivalry to the Olympic Games. The festival consisted solely of the sacrifices and rites proper to the season (mid-August) in the cult of Athena, the city's protector. At the Great Panathenaea, representatives of all the dependencies of Athens were present, bringing sacrificial animals. After the presentation of a new embroidered robe to Athena, the sacrifice of several animals was offered. The great procession, which included the heroes of Marathon, is the subject of the frieze of the Parthenon. Musical contests were held, and portions of epic poems were recited, a long-standing accompaniment of the festival. The contests took place in the odeum, originally built for the purpose by Pericles himself.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 古希臘全部城邦榮耀雅典娜的宗教慶典。每四年一度盛大舉行，可能意在與奧林匹克競技賽相抗衡。單純由合於節氣（八月中）、目的在膜拜守護神雅典娜的獻祭與儀式所構成。大雅典娜節中（Great Panathenaea），來自雅典各屬國的代表皆會出席，並帶上獻祭的動物。為雅典娜獻上全新的刺繡袍裙後，接著供奉數種牲品。馬拉松英雄也在行列中的大遊行，成為帕德嫩神廟柱子中楣的描述主題。舉辦音樂競賽，並吟誦史詩，是祭典中行之有年的附加活動。競賽舉辦在培里克利斯（Pericles）本人親自為此競賽所興建的奏樂堂。 |
| Dutch ..... Grieks religieus staatsfestival ter ere van Athena. Uiteindelijk werd het elke vier jaar met veel pracht en praal gevierd, waarschijnlijk om de concurrentie aan te gaan met de Olympische Spelen. Het festival bestond uitsluitend uit offers en rituelen die pasten bij het seizoen (half augustus) in de cultus van Athena, de beschermgodin van de stad. Tijdens de Grote Panathenaeïsche spelen brachten vertegenwoordigers van alle van Athene afhankelijke gebiedsdelen offerdieren. Na het aanbieden aan Athena van een nieuw geborduurd kleed werden verschillende dieren aan haar geofferd. De grote processie met deelname van de helden van Marathon is het onderwerp van de fries van het Parthenon. Van oudsher werden er tijdens het festival muzikale wedstrijden gehouden en delen van epische gedichten voorgedragen. De wedstrijden vonden plaats in het Odeum, door Pericles zelf voor dit doel gebouwd. |
