Note: In the context of heraldry, short texts that reflect significance to the bearer, often placed above or below coats of arms, usually on a scroll. Mottos may appear in the blazons of noble families, in institutes, knightly orders, abbeys and chapters, monastic orders and congregations, clerics, universities, cities and states. Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Korte tekst die de intentie of levenshouding van de gebruiker van de betreffende wapenspreuk weergeeft. Het devies staat op een bandelier of lint onder het wapen in tegenstelling tot de leus die boven het wapen of op de rand van de wapentent staat. In Schotland doet men dit andersom. Een devies vindt men terug in het blazoen bij adelijke families, in de heraldiek, bij instituten, ridderorden, abdijen en kapittels, kloosterordes en congregaties, clerici, universiteiten, steden en staten.De meeste Europese geslachten voeren een korte wapenspreuk, die vaak de ideologie van de familie krachtig verwoordt. Meestal in het Latijn, maar andere talen zijn ook gebruikelijk.
