Note: Monolithic stone figures carved of volcanic tuff, a soft volcanic stone. On average, the moai sculptures stand 13 feet high and weigh 14 tons. The moai represent the Easter Island ancestral chiefs whose supernatural power protected the community. The common structure of the moai consists of a trunk, engraved, inset arms and an angular head. Monumental moai figures are the most common and well known of Easter Island art, although various sizes and styles of moai do exist.

| Dutch ..... Monolithische stenen figuurvoorstellingen, uitgehakt in vulkanische tufsteen, een zachte vulkanische steen. Gemiddeld zijn moai-beelden 4 meter hoog en 14 ton zwaar. De moai stellen de voorvaderlijke stamhoofden van Paaseiland voor, die de gemeenschap beschermden met hun bovennatuurlijke krachten. De moai bestaan meestal uit een romp, gegraveerde ingezette armen en een hoekig hoofd. Monumentale moai-figuurvoorstellingen komen het meest voor in en zijn vooral bekend uit de kunst op Paaseiland, hoewel er moai van verschillende formaten en stijlen bestaan. |
