Note: Substances added to food for non-nutritional purposes, but for purposes such as to preserve the food, enhance flavor, or to improve or retain appearance. Additives such as salt, spices, and sulfites have been used since ancient times to preserve foods and make them more palatable. With the increased processing of foods from the 20th century onwards, there came a need for both the greater use of and new types of chemical food additives.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Stoffen die aan levensmiddelen worden toegevoegd, niet vanwege de voedingswaarde maar bijvoorbeeld om het product langer houdbaar te laten zijn, de smaak te verhogen of het uiterlijk te behouden of te verbeteren. Additieven zoals zout, specerijen en sulfieten worden al sinds de oudheid gebruikt om levensmiddelen te bewaren en smakelijker te maken. Vanaf de 20e eeuw worden levensmiddelen in toenemende mate verwerkt en is er dus behoefte ontstaan aan grootschaliger gebruik van chemische levensmiddelenadditieven en nieuwe soorten.
