Note: An informal group of painters that was centered in the village of Barbizon around the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau. Influenced by John Constable and 17th century Dutch landscape painters, the Barbizon painters were concerned with depicting naturalistic settings and the dignity of peasant life. Theodore Rousseau, the unofficial leader of the School, moved to the Fontainebleau region in 1841 and began acquiring disciples, such as Jean-Francois Millet, who would later become the most renown member of the Barbizon School, and whose work had more overt socialist overtones. Because of their non-traditional approach to subject matter, it took until the 1850's for the individual members of the School to become critically accepted. Rousseau, in fact, had been rejected by the Salons so often he garnered the nickname 'le grande refuse'. After several decades of success, the movement lost popularity with Millet's death in 1875. Though often seen as a transitional movement between classical landscape painting and Impressionism, the Barbizon School's importance lies with their plein-air landscape technique and humble, unpretentious subject matter.

| Dutch ..... Informele groep schilders met als centrum het dorp Barbizon, aan de rand van het bos van Fontainebleau. De Barbizon-schilders waren beïnvloed door John Constable en door de Hollandse landschapsschilders van de 17de eeuw, en hielden zich vooral bezig met het afbeelden van natuurscènes en het boerenleven. Theodore Rousseau, officieus leider van de School, streek in 1841 neer in de omgeving van Fontainebleau en verzamelde daar een groep discipelen om zich heen. Een van hen was Jean-Francois Millet, die later het beroemdste lid van de School van Barbizon zou worden, en in wiens werk het socialistische gedachtegoed het sterkst doorklonk. Hun onconventionele benadering van de onderwerpen had tot gevolg dat het werk van de afzonderlijke leden van de School pas in de jaren 50 van de 19de eeuw genade zou vinden in de ogen van de critici. Het werk van Rousseau werd zelfs zo vaak door de Salons geweigerd dat het hem de bijnaam 'le grand refusé' bezorgde. De beweging was een aantal decennia lang succesvol, maar na de dood van Millet in 1875 taande de populariteit. De School van Barbizon wordt vaak beschouwd als een overgangsstroming tussen de academische landschapsschilderkunst en het impressionisme, maar het belang is vooral gelegen in het feit dat ze in de open lucht schilderden en hun onderwerpen op eenvoudige, pretentieloze wijze benaderden. |
| Spanish ..... Un grupo informal de pintores localizados en el pueblo de Barbizon, en la frontera de los Bosques de Fontainebleau. Influenciados por John Constable y los paisajisas holandeses del siglo XVII, los pintores Barbizon estaban preocupados con representar entornos de manera naturalista y la dignidad de la vida campesina. Theodore Rousseau, el líder no oficial de esta Escuela, se trasladó a la región de Fontainebleau en 1841 y se hizo de discípulos como Juean-Francois Millet, quien posteriormente se convirtió en el miembro de la Escuela de Barbizon de mayor renombre y cuyo trabajo presentara un abierto trasfondo socialista. Cada miembre de esta Escuela debió esperar hasta la década de 1850 para ser aceptados por la crítica.
