Note: Material derived from eggs, which in the context of art materials are usually the ellipsoidal shell and embryonic contents produced by birds. For paintings, the egg contents are used as a tempera medium. The whole egg, yolk, or white may be used sometimes mixed with oil and/or resin. The egg yolk is a stable emulsion of an aqueous liquid with an oily, proteinaceous medium which dries quickly into a hard, insoluble film. Egg white has been used as a medium for illuminated manuscripts. It is also used as a size for attaching gold leaf. Albumen is the adhesive substance of egg white. As a pure film, albumen is clear, brittle, and water soluble. Water solubility can be decreased by heating or adding tannin. For the exterior of a bird egg comprising the brittle shell composed of keratin and calcite, use "eggshell (animal material)."

| Dutch ..... Materiaal afgeleid van eieren, dat in de context van kunstmaterialen meestal de ellipsoïde schil en embryonale inhoud geproduceerd door vogels is. Voor schilderijen wordt de ei-inhoud gebruikt als een temperamedium. Het hele ei, dooier of wit kan soms worden gemengd met olie en / of hars. De eigeel is een stabiele emulsie van een waterige vloeistof met een olieachtig, proteïneachtig medium dat snel in een harde, onoplosbare film droogt. Eiwit werd gebruikt als medium voor verluchte manuscripten. Het wordt ook gebruikt als maat voor het bevestigen van bladgoud. Albumen is de kleefstof van eiwit. Als pure film is het albumine helder, broos en oplosbaar in water. De oplosbaarheid in water kan worden verlaagd door te verwarmen of tannine toe te voegen. Voor de buitenzijde van een vogelei bestaande uit de brosse schaal van keratine en calciet, gebruik "eischaal (dierlijk materiaal)." |
| German ..... Material, das von Eiern stammt und sich im Zusammenhang mit Kunstobjekten normalerweise auf die ellipsenförmigen Schalen und den embryonalen Inhalt von Vogeleiern bezieht. Für Gemälde wird der Inhalt als Mittel für Temperafarbe verwendet. Das ganze Ei, Dotter und Eiklar werden manchmal mit Öl und/oder Harz gemischt. Das Eigelb ist eine stabile Emulsion einer wässrigen Lösung mit einem öligen, proteinhaltigen Medium, das schnell zu einer harten, unlöslichen Schicht trocknet. Das Eiklar ist als ein Mittel für Bilderhandschriften verwendet worden. Es wird auch zur Beschichtung mit Blattgold benutzt. Eiweiß (Albumin) ist die klebende Substanz des Eiklars. Als pure Schicht ist Eiweiß klar, spröde und wasserlöslich. Die Wasserlöslichkeit kann durch Erhitzung oder das Zusetzen von Gerbstoff vermindert werden. Für das Äußere eines Vogeleis einschließlich der zerbrechlichen Schale aus Keratin und Kalzit, siehe "Eischale (Tiermaterial)". |
