Note: A pale gray, porous variety of the volcanic stone rhyolite; it is composed of potassium aluminum silicate with small amounts of iron and alkalis. Pumice is used as an abrasive for polishing jewelry, cleaning metals, and smoothing vellum and parchment. In its solid form it is used as an abrasive and aggregate and in its powdered form it is used as a polish and abrasive.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Een poreus, schuimachtig vulkaanglas dat door een snel afkoelingsproces niet is gekristalliseerd; het is schuimig door het plotseling vrijkomen van opgeloste gassen. Het is licht van kleur en van gewicht en blijft drijven op water. In vaste vorm wordt het gebruikt als schuurmiddel en in poedervorm als polijst- en schuurmiddel. Het heeft vaak de samenstelling van ryoliet. Obsidiaan verandert in puimsteen wanneer het smelt. 
Spanish ..... Vidrio volcánico que parece espuma, pero que no cristalizó por enfriamiento rápido y por ello que se volvió espumoso por la liberación súbita de gases disueltos. Es de color claro y muy liviano, suficiente para flotar en agua. En su forma sólida es utilizado como abrasivo y agregado, y en su forma en polvo es utilizado como pulidor y abrasivo. Tiene a menudo la composición de la riolita. Al fundirse, la obsidiana se convierte en piedra pómez.
