Note: Roman Catholic order of mendicant friars, religious men who lead a monastic life, including the choral recitation of the liturgical office, but do active work. It was founded in 1233 by a group of seven cloth merchants of Florence, known as the Seven Holy Founders; they left their families and occupations to withdraw outside the gates of Florence and live a life of poverty, penance, and fellowship. The order was recognized in 1256 by Pope Alexander IV. Nuns are also included with in the Servite family.

| Dutch ..... Rooms-katholieke orde van bedelmonniken, dat wil zeggen religieuze mannen die een kloosterleven leiden, inclusief het reciteren van de liturgie, maar die ook actief werk verrichten. De orde werd in 1233 opgericht door een groep van zeven handelaren in stoffen uit Florence, die de Zeven Heilige Stichters worden genoemd. Zij gaven hun gezin en hun beroep op en trokken zich terug buiten de poorten van Florence om een leven van armoede, boetedoening en broederschap te leiden. De orde werd in 1256 erkend door paus Alexander IV. Er zijn ook nonnen onder de servieten. |
