|
Note: Panels or hangings for the front of a Christian altar, pulpit, or lectern; may be carved, painted, embroidered, or otherwise decorated. Antependia are of various materials including wood, ivory, precious metals, and embroidered textiles. The exposed position of precious antependia meant that they were sometimes moved on top of the altar for safety, thus becoming retables. If the coverings are continued around the sides and back they are called "paraments" or paliotti.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 基督教祭壇、佈道壇或讀經臺前方所懸之鑲板或掛幔，上具雕刻、圖畫、刺繡或其他裝飾。祭壇飾物可用木頭、象牙、貴重金屬及刺繡布品等各種材料製成。由於貴重的掛幔在壇前缺乏屏障，故有時基於安全考量，會被移至祭壇上方，成為祭壇後部裝飾。壇前掛幔上所飾之圖像類型繁多，最常見的題材是坐在寶座上的聖王基督，其周圍環繞新約聖經中的場景。掛幔若延伸至祭壇側邊和背面，則稱為「祭壇飾帷（paraments）」或「祭壇披布（paliotti）」。 |
| Dutch ..... Beeldgesneden, beschilderde, geborduurde of anderszins gedecoreerde panelen of voorhangsels aan de voorzijde van een altaar, preekstoel of lessenaar in een christelijke gebedsruimte. Antependia kunnen uit allerlei materialen zijn vervaardigd, zoals hout, ivoor, edelmetalen of geborduurd textiel. Waardevolle antependia werden om veiligheidsredenen soms boven aan het altaar geplaatst, waardoor hun functie veranderde in die van een retabel. De iconografie kan per antependium verschillen, maar het meest voorkomende thema is dat van de Maiestas Domini, omgeven door taferelen uit het Nieuwe Testament. Indien het voorhangsel rondom doorloopt, wordt het een paliotto genoemd. |
| German ..... Geschnitzes, bemaltes, besticktes oder anders dekoriertes Panel oder Behang für die Vorderseite eines christlichen Altars, einer Kanzel oder eines Lesepults. Antependien können aus verschiedenen Materialien bestehen, wie Holz, Elfenbein, Edelmetall oder bestickten Textilien bestehen. Die ungeschützte Lage des kostbaren Antipendiums führte manchmal dazu, dass man es aus Sicherheitsgründen auf den Altar stellte, sodass es zur Retabel wurde. Die Ikonographie eines Antipendiums variiert, aber das verbreitetste Motiv war Christus, der Allmächtige umgeben von Szenen aus dem Neuen Testament. Wenn sich die Behänge auf den Seiten oder auf der Rückseite fortsetzen, werden sie Paramente (Altarzubehör) oder Paliotti genannt. |
