It extends from 542 to 251 million years ago and includes the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian periods .The Paleozoic begins with the Cambrian explosion, an unparallelled diversification of organisms, and ends with the Permian extinction, the largest mass extinction in Earth's history. It precedes the Mesozoic era.

Deze duurde van ongeveer 542 miljoen tot 251 miljoen jaar geleden en wordt onderverdeeld in de periodes van het cambrium, ordovicium, siluur, devoon, carboon en perm. Het paleozoïcum begon met de cambrische explosie, een plotselinge en enorme diversificatie van organismen, en eindigde met de perm-massa-extinctie, het meest grootschalige uitsterven van soorten in de geschiedenis van de aarde. Het werd gevolgd door het mesozoïcum. |
