Note: Fragrant myrrhlike oleoresin obtained from the small evergreen tree, Commiphora opobalsamum, native to the Middle East. Used in perfumes and medicines. Referred to in biblical Genesis as a healing balm; valued in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The term "balm of Gilead" has been incorrectly used to refer to "Canada balsam," which is derived from a North American tree.

Wordt gebruikt in parfums en medicijnen. In het Bijbelboek Genesis wordt ernaar verwezen als een genezende balsem. In het oude Griekenland en het Romeinse Rijk werd het beschouwd als een waardevol medicijn en parfum. De term 'ontariopopulierenhars' wordt soms onterecht gebruikt om te verwijzen naar 'canadabalsem', die afkomstig is van een Noord-Amerikaanse boom. |
