Note: Species of tall, deciduous tree that grew widely in the eastern half of North America, and was popularly used for lumber, shade, and ornamentation prior to the 1930's. The hard, tough coarse-grain wood was also used for ship building because it bends well and does not splinter. Dutch elm disease, a fungus carried by the elm-leaf beetle, has systematically killed many of these trees.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 高大落葉喬木樹種，廣泛生長於北美洲東半部，西元1930年之前，是非常受歡迎的木材、遮蔭、觀賞樹種。木材堅硬強韌，紋理粗糙，由於易於彎曲且不易崩裂，運用於船隻的製造。榆樹葉上的甲蟲所攜帶的真菌引發了荷蘭榆樹病，已造成許多美國榆樹的死亡。 |
| Dutch ..... Hoge loofboom die vroeger veel voorkwam in de oostelijke helft van Noord-Amerika en voor de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw op grote schaal werd gebruikt als sierboom en vanwege het hout en de schaduw. Het harde, sterke en grofvezelige hout gebruikte men ook voor het bouwen van schepen, omdat het makkelijk te buigen is en niet splintert. Veel van deze bomen zijn gedood door de iepziekte, een schimmel die wordt verspreid door de iepenspintkever. |
