Genus van 30 tot 50 soorten kleine bladverliezende bomen of struiken, waarvan vele soorten (vlezige) pitvruchten voortbrengen waarin het gerijpte vruchtbeginsel en het omringende weefsel zowel vlezig als eetbaar worden.
