Note: Gold disks of the Akan people of Africa, often elaborately worked, usually worn as pectoral pendants, but known to be worn occasionally attached to caps or the hair or tied to the ankle. Their original function, especially among the Asante, was to mark the wearer as the "akra" or "soul washer" of a king, responsible for cleansing the king's soul in ceremonies of purification or soul renewal. Later on akrafokonmu became multifunctional, worn by kings, chiefs, sword bearers, heralds, sub-chiefs, war leaders, junior officials, and young girls at puberty ceremonies.

| Dutch ..... Gouden schijven van het Afrikaanse Akan-volk, vaak verfijnd afgewerkt, doorgaans op de borst gedragen hangers, maar sporadisch ook bevestigd aan kapjes of het haar of de enkel. Ze waren oorspronkelijk bedoeld, met name bij de Asante, om de drager te onderscheiden als de 'akra' of 'zielenreiniger' van een koning, die verantwoordelijk was voor het reinigen van de ziel van de koning tijdens zuiveringsrituelen of ceremonieën ter vernieuwing van de ziel. Later kregen akrafokonmu meerdere functies en werden ze gedragen door koningen, stamhoofden, zwaarddragers, herauten, onderhoofden, krijgsheren, lagere functionarissen en jonge meisjes tijdens puberteitsrituelen. |
| Spanish ..... Discos de oro de la gente de Akan, Africa, frecuentemente trabajados elaboradamente, usualmente usado como pendientes pectorales, pero conocido para ser usado ocasionalmente adosado a una gorra o el cabello o unido al tobillo. Su función original, especialmente entre los Asantes, era para marcar lo que se llevaba puesto como el "akra" o "lavador de alma" de un rey, responsable para la limpieza del alma del rey en ceremonias de purificación o renovación del alma. Más tarde un AKRAFOKONMU llegó a ser multifuncional, usado por reyes, jefes, portadores de espadas, heraldos, subjefes, jefes de guerra, oficiales jóvenes, y jóvenes muchachas en ceremonias de pubertad. |
