Note: Photographic prints made by the carbon process, which uses carbon pigment and gelatin to transfer images to a paper support. Carbon prints show a very slight relief and rarely exhibit signs of aging or image deterioration. During the last quarter of the 19th century they were widely used for book illustrations and the commercial reproduction of conventionally made photographs and prints.

| Dutch ..... Fotografische afdrukken vervaardigd volgens de kooldruktechniek. Hierbij wordt gelatine, dat door middel van een dichromaat lichtgevoelig is gemaakt, samen met een pigment, b.v. koolstof, op pigmentpapier aangebracht. Tijdens de belichting wordt de gelatine in meerdere of mindere mate gelooid, afhankelijk van de zwarting in het negatief. Deze gelooide gelatine is onoplosbaar in water. Om het beeld te kunnen ontwikkelen (waarbij de niet-gelooide gelatine, die zich onder het gelooide laagje bevindt, verwijderd moet worden) moet het belichte pigmentpapier overgedragen worden op een tijdelijke drager. Na de ontwikkeling (in warm water) wordt het beeld, dat spiegelbeeldig op deze tijdelijke drager is aangebracht, nogmaals overgedragen op het uiteindelijke papier. Veel toegepast voor kunstreprodukties. |
| German ..... Fotodruck mit Kohleverfahren, bei dem Kohlepigment und Gelatine dazu verwendet werden, die Abbildung auf den Papierträger zu übertragen. Der Kohledruck besitzt ein leichtes Relief und zeigt nur selten sichtbare Alterungserscheinungen oder Abbildungsveränderungen. Im letzten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde er oft für Buchabbildungen und für kommerzielle Reproduktionen für herkömmlich hergestellte Fotografien verwendet. |
