Note: Concept of state of deep inner freedom and peace, the supreme goal of Hinduism and Buddhism. Reaching nirvana means liberation from samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. In Buddhism, nirvana represents freedom from attachments and individual consciousness and the attainment of tranquility and purity. Nirvana is conceived somewhat differently within the various schools of Buddhism. In Hinduism it furthermore means that union with God or the Absolute is possible.

Chinese (traditional) ..... 此詞彙用在印度宗教中意指深度內在自由與和平的狀態。對印度教及尤其是佛教來說,達成這樣的境界是最崇高的目標。達到涅槃意指從生死疾苦等輪迴中解脫。在佛教中,涅槃意指從情感牽掛與個人意識中獲得自由,並獲得安寧與純淨。佛陀在開悟後達到暫時性的涅槃(活著時的涅槃),但他繼續服務並傳道,直到死亡,此時他達到最終且完整的涅槃(般涅槃)。涅槃在佛教的各流派中意義不盡相同。涅槃在印度教中意指所有塵世慾念及牽掛的消滅,且更進一步意指梵我合一是可能的。達到涅槃意為解脫。此詞彙在西方常被誤述為「滅絕」或「消滅」。 
Dutch ..... Een term die in de context van Indiase religie wordt gebruikt om een staat van diepe innerlijke vrijheid en vrede aan te duiden. Het bereiken van deze staat is het hoogste doel van het hindoeïsme en vooral het boeddhisme. Het bereiken van nirwana betekent bevrijding van samsara, de kringloop van geboorte, dood en wedergeboorte. In het boeddhisme staat nirwana voor vrijheid van bindingen en individueel bewustzijn en het bereiken van rust en zuiverheid. Boeddha bereikte het tijdelijke nirwana (nirwana tijdens het leven) na zijn verlichting maar hij leefde voort en bleef dienen en prediken tot zijn dood, toen hij zijn definitieve en volledige nirwana (parinirvana) bereikte. Nirwana wordt enigszins verschillend opgevat binnen de verschillende scholen van het boeddhisme. Nirwana betekent in het hindoeïsme ook het uitdoven van alle wereldse begeerte en bindingen, en maakt bovendien de vereniging met God of het Absolute mogelijk. Het bereiken van nirwana is moksa. De term ‘nirwana’ is in het westen vaak onjuist omschreven als 'uitroeiing' of 'vernietiging'. 
Spanish ..... Término usado en el contexto de la religión india para denotar un estado de libertad y paz interna profunda. Alcanzar este estado es la meta suprema del Hinduismo y, sobre todo, del Budismo. Alcanzar el nirvana significa liberación del samsara, el ciclo de nacimiento, muerte y renacimiento. En Budismo, el nirvana representa la libertad de las ataduras y conciencia individual y el logro de tranquilidad y pureza. Buda logró el nirvana temporal (nirvana en la vida) después de su iluminación, pero él vivió para servir y predicar hasta su muerte, cuando alcanzó su nirvana final y completo (parinirvana). El Nirvana se concibe de formas diferentes dentro de las varias escuelas de Budismo. El Nirvana asimismo significa la extinción de todo los deseos y las ataduras mundanas en Hinduismo y además significa que la unión con Dios o el Absoluto es posible. El logro de nirvana es moksha. El término se ha descrito a menudo inexactamente en occidente como "extinción" o "aniquilación."
