Note: Genus of freshwater fish; the only living genus in the family Esocidae, which were endemic to North America, Europe, and Eurasia during the Paleogene through present. They are distinguished by an elongate body, small scales, long head, shovellike snout, and large mouth armed with strong teeth. The dorsal and anal fins are far back on the tail.

Dutch ..... Geslacht van zoetwatervissen; het enige levende geslacht van de familie Esocidae, die van het paleogeen tot het heden endemisch waren in Noord-Amerika, Europa en EuraziĆ«. Ze zijn te herkennen aan hun langwerpige lichaam, kleine schubben, lange kop, schopachtige snuit en grote bek, die bewapend is met sterke tanden. De rug- en aarsvinnen bevinden zich aan de achterkant van de staart.
