Note: Style of painting that flourished in Italy and northern Europe for three decades after the death of Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610). The style was strongly influenced by Caravaggio’s use of everyday, common or lower class scenes and figures; the style employed the lighting effects of tenebrism (figures and objects in a dark background, with some details picked out as strongly lit from a single light source).

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Schilderstijl die dertig jaar lang floreerde in Italië en Noord-Europa na de dood van Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610). De stijl was sterk beïnvloed door Caravaggio's gebruik van alledaagse, gewone taferelen en figuren uit midden- en lagere klassen. In de stijl werden de lichteffecten van het tenebrisme gebruikt: figuren en objecten op een donkere achtergrond, met enkele details sterk uitgelicht met één lichtbron.
