Note: Style of painting that flourished in Italy and northern Europe for three decades after the death of Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610). The style was strongly influenced by Caravaggio’s use of everyday, common or lower class scenes and figures; the style employed the lighting effects of tenebrism (figures and objects in a dark background, with some details picked out as strongly lit from a single light source).

| Dutch ..... Schilderstijl die dertig jaar lang floreerde in Italië en Noord-Europa na de dood van Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610). De stijl was sterk beïnvloed door Caravaggio's gebruik van alledaagse, gewone taferelen en figuren uit midden- en lagere klassen. In de stijl werden de lichteffecten van het tenebrisme gebruikt: figuren en objecten op een donkere achtergrond, met enkele details sterk uitgelicht met één lichtbron. |
| French ..... Style de peinture qui a proliféré en Italie et en Europe du Nord durant les trente années qui ont suivi la mort de Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, dit le Caravage (1571-1610). Ce style a été profondément influencé par les scènes et personnages de la vie courante, de la classe populaire ou de la société marginale représentés par le Caravage. Ce style fait usage des effets lumineux propres au ténébrisme (personnages et objets sur arrière-plan sombre, dont certains détails sont éclairés par une source lumineuse unique). |
