Note: Species of medium-sized subtropical citrus tree known for its large, globular, bitter fruit. The grapefruit probably originated in Jamaica as a hybrid of C. grandis. It became well established as a fruit for home consumption in the islands of the West Indies before its culture spread to the American mainland.

Dutch ..... Middelgrote subtropische citrusboom die bekendstaat om zijn grote ronde vruchten met een bittere smaak. De boom is waarschijnlijk in Jamaica ontstaan als een kruising van C. grandis (pomelo). De grapefruit werd eerst op de Cara├»bische eilanden populair als eetbare vrucht. Later begon men de boom ook te kweken op het Amerikaanse vasteland.
