De naam is afgeleid van het Griekse woord voor regenboog, waarmee wordt verwezen naar de grote kleurenvariëteit van de bloemen binnen deze soort. Irissen zijn inheems in Europa, Noord-Afrika en gematigde delen van Azië en Amerika.
