Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Genus dat circa 300 soorten bloeiende planten omvat. De naam is afgeleid van het Griekse woord voor regenboog, waarmee wordt verwezen naar de grote kleurenvariĆ«teit van de bloemen binnen deze soort. Irissen zijn inheems in Europa, Noord-Afrika en gematigde delen van AziĆ« en Amerika. De meeste soorten hebben knolachtige (minder vaak bolvormige of vezelige) wortels, zwaardvormige equitante bladeren en opzichtige bloemen.
