Note: Order containing around 80 species in extant 10 families, the living members characterized by being nearly fully adapted to aquatic life with a fusiform (streamlined) body, forelimbs modified into flippers, tiny vestigial hindlimbs that do not attach to the backbone and are hidden within the body, a tail with horizontal flukes, being nearly hairless, insulation provided by a thick layer of blubber, and typically a high level of intelligence.

Chinese (traditional) ..... 含八十個種、十個現存科的目,現存的物種幾乎完全適應水棲生活,身軀為紡錘狀(流線型),前肢變為鰭肢,小型而退化的後肢隱藏於體內,而無連接脊骨,尾巴帶有橫尾片,幾乎無毛,厚厚一層的鯨脂具隔絕作用,為高智慧動物。 
Dutch ..... Orde van ongeveer 80 soorten in 10 bestaande families. De leden van deze orde zijn bijna volledig aangepast aan het leven in het water. Ze hebben een spoelvormig (gestroomlijnd) lichaam, voorste ledematen die in flippers zijn veranderd, zeer kleine rudimentaire achterste ledematen die niet aan de ruggengraat vastzitten en verborgen liggen in het lichaam en een staart met een horizontale vin. De dieren hebben bijna geen haar. Een dikke laag blubber zorgt voor isolatie. De meeste soorten hebben een grote intelligentie.
