Note: Devices that generate electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet, visible, or infrared spectrum, in the form of a very narrow continuous or intermittent beam. Originally an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation;" the first functional laser was built by Theodore H. Maiman (1927-2007), and demonstrated in 1960. Lasers have multiple applications: they are used as components in information retrieval and transmission devices and systems, cutting, measuring, and medical tools, and as entertainment devices.

Het woord 'laser' is ontstaan als acroniem voor 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation'. De eerste functionele laser werd gebouwd door Theodore H. Maiman (1927-2007) en gedemonstreerd in 1960. Lasers hebben meerdere toepassingen: ze worden gebruikt als onderdelen van apparaten en systemen voor het ophalen en verzenden van informatie, voor snijden, meten en in medische instrumenten, en voor amusement. |
