Note: Period and culture in Japan, dating approximately 1334-1392, during the formative years of the Muromachi era, when two imperial seats existed: in the North of Kyoto and the South of Yoshino. Two rival courts clamied the legitimate right to rule. The schism symbolized a transition in which the civil aristocracy of Kyoto lost their political and economic power to the provincial military class.

De tweedeling symboliseerde een overgang waarin de burgerlijke aristocratie van Kyoto zijn politieke en economische macht verloor aan de militaire klasse in de provincie.
