Note: Sovereigns or supreme monarchs of an empire, which is a political unit that comprises a number of territories or nations and is ruled by a single supreme authority. The use of the term is often restricted to reference to such supreme authorities in only certain parts of the world, including the ancient Roman empire, the Early Christian Roman empire, and the empires of Austria-Hungary, China, Japan, Morocco, India, Asia Minor, and Germany. The rulers of conglomerate political states in other parts of the world are generally known by other titles. The term "emperors" always refers to males, while "empresses" refers to female rulers.

Vaak wordt de term alleen gebruikt om te verwijzen naar dergelijke heersers in bepaalde delen van de wereld, zoals in het oude Romeinse keizerrijk, het vroegchristelijke Romeinse keizerrijk en de keizerrijken van Oostenrijk-Hongarije, China, Japan, Marokko, India, Klein-Azië en Duitsland. In andere delen van de wereld hebben de heersers van conglomeraties van politieke staten doorgaans andere titels. De term 'keizers' verwijst altijd naar mannen, terwijl 'keizerinnen' altijd naar vrouwelijke heersers verwijst. 
Spanish ..... Soberanos o monarcas supremos de un imperio como unidad política que comprende una serie de territorios o naciones y gobernadas por sólo una autoridad suprema. El uso del término muchas veces es restringido para referirse a ese tipo de autoridad suprema sólo en algunas partes del mundo, incluyendo el Antiguo Imperio Romano, el Imperio Cristiano Paleoromano y los imperios austro-húngaro, de China, Japón, Marruecos, India, Asia Menor y Alemania. Generalmente, los gobernantes de estados políticos conglomerados en otras partes del mundo se conocen por otros títulos. El término "emperador" siempre es masculino, mientras "emperatriz" se refiere a gobernantes femeninas.
