Note: Thin, opaque, vitreous coating that is applied to the surface of a ceramic body by painting, spraying, or dipping, in order to add color, texture, or water resistance to the object. The glaze is applied to the surface of a fired ceramic piece, and then the piece is refired at a temperature that vitrifies the glaze, but is lower than the original firing temperature. Ceramic glazes are usually mixtures of silicates, colorants, and flux.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 一種質薄、不透光的玻璃塗層，以粉刷、噴灑或浸入的方式使用在陶瓷坯體表面，以增進物件的色彩、質地或防水性。過程中先將釉塗在已燒陶片的表面，之後再將陶片以能使釉料轉為玻璃的溫度重燒，不過此溫度要比最先燒陶的溫度低。陶瓷釉通常為矽酸鹽、著色劑和助熔劑的混合物。 |
| Portuguese ..... Revestimento fino, opaco e vítreo que é aplicado à superfície de um corpo cerâmico por pintura, pulverização ou imersão, a fim de adicionar cor, textura ou resistência à água ao objeto. O esmalte é aplicado na superfície de uma peça cerâmica queimada, e então a peça é requeimada a uma temperatura que vitrifica o esmalte, mas é inferior à temperatura original de queima. Esmaltes cerâmicos são geralmente misturas de silicatos, corantes e fundentes. |
