Following on the success of Building Music, the Getty Research Institute joins forces again with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a two-day event focusing on the acoustical and durational side of Minimalism.
The program features some of the leading artists and critics associated with Minimalism and will be presented both at the Getty Center and at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This public forum examines key moments of intersection between Minimalist music and other art forms, including the visual arts, dance, film, and theater. Talks examine both specific events—such as the loft series organized by Yoko Ono and La Monte Young and the workshops given by Anna Halprin—as well as more general connections, like the relationship of Minimalist music to the mass media and the interconnection between music and sculpture in the 1960s.

The Calder Quartet will perform Riley's String Quartet (1960) and String Trio (1961), and Riley will present a solo piano performance featuring his Keyboard Studies.

The conversation continues at Walt Disney Concert Hall, focusing on specific collaborations between Minimalist composers and other artists, many of whom are not Minimalists in their own fields. Over the years these composers have collaborated across a broad spectrum of media, working with filmmakers on scores, with choreographers on dance performances, with designers and directors on theatrical and operatic works, and even with visual artists on installations, performances, and video pieces. Works under discussion will be performed live in the concert hall.
Participants include composers John Adams and Philip Glass and designer Robert Israel.
