Constanza Bonarelli drove Gian Lorenzo Bernini mad with passion—and inspired him to conjure flesh from stone in one of his most breathtakingly lifelike marble portraits. In this lecture complementing the exhibition Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture, art historian Sarah McPhee discusses the consummate artistry of this portrait and uncovers the human being behind the masterpiece, sharing new discoveries about Bonarelli's identity and life based on groundbreaking archival research. McPhee describes Bernini and Bonarelli's tempestuous affair and reveals new details about Bonarelli's influential career as art collector and dealer.
About Sarah McPhee
Sarah McPhee is professor of art history at Emory University and a specialist in 17th- and 18th-century European art, Baroque sculpture, and artistic biography. She is currently working on a cultural biography of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the forthcoming book Bernini's Mistress: A Portrait of Costanza Piccolomini. She is also the author of Bernini and the Bell Towers: Architecture and Politics at the Vatican, among other books and articles.
About Gian Lorenzo Bernini
In the 1600s, Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his contemporaries transformed the portrait bust into a groundbreaking art form. Known in his time as the "new Michelangelo," Bernini was a master at creating immediate, informal, and lifelike portraits, many of which are featured in the major exhibition Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture. Bernini and his contemporaries invented a new language of portraiture that masterfully depicted sitters' individualized character and vitality.
