The National Archives: Preserving America's History (Conservation Matters lecture)

Date: Thursday, February 16, 2006, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Doris A. Hamburg joined the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) as director of preservation programs in 2001, just when it was embarking on one of its most important projects ever: the conservation of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

No one knew exactly what would happen when Hamburg and her team removed these 200-year-old parchments from their helium-filled chambers, where they had rested undisturbed since 1951. Hamburg will discuss what they found, how they assessed and repaired the damage to these centuries-old documents, and how space-age technology played a role in constructing their new cases.

About NARA
The holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) represent the entire history of public record keeping in the United States—from the Declaration of Independence and Civil War muster rolls to Census files and naturalization records. NARA's billions of holdings include books, movies, textiles, and everything in between.

About Doris A. Hamburg
Doris A. Hamburg spent the majority of her professional career at the Library of Congress, where she developed and managed a program that oversaw the preservation of 110 million items, including books, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, maps, three-dimensional objects, and recordings.
