Friday Nights at the Getty: Dave Alvin (performance)

Date: Friday, November 3, 2006
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Harold M. Williams Auditorium
Admission: Free; reservations required.

Grammy Award-winner Dave Alvin performs songs from his latest album, West of the West: Songs from California Songwriters, featuring his eclectic blend of blues, country, rock and roll, pop, folk and R&B.

Alvin rose to fame in the '80s as a member of The Blasters, then had brief stints with X and The Knitters before kicking off a solo career with his 1987 album Romeo's Escape.

Born in California and raised in the blue-collar inner suburb of Downey, Alvin has always favored the California musical accent. His unique brand of music has been influenced by his fellow California songwriters—blues greats Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker, Bakersfield soundmakers Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and those pop-rock chroniclers of suntanned hopes and film noir disappointments, Randy Newman, Brian Wilson, and Tom Waits.
