The Homeric Hymns are a collection of narrative praise poems from the era of traveling bards who shared songs across disparate civilizations near Greece. They tell of Demeter’s grief and the creation of the seasons, Dionysus foiling his pirate captors with the intoxication of the “wine-dark sea,” and the daily march of the Sun and Moon. In a series of new musical adaptations, acclaimed performance-makers Four Larks fuse this ancient poetry with harmonies and rhythms drawn from contemporary praise-music traditions, accompanied by visuals filmed at the Getty Villa. These hymns reveal an enduring impulse to endow the world around us with poetry and music, even in times of tribulation.

Four Larks previews this episodic project-in-development as a part of the Villa Theater Lab program.
