Anti-Racist Language for Collections and Archives
Representatives from GRI Special Collections Cataloging and Institutional Archives have formed a working group to eliminate racist and biased language, distortion, and the erasure of BIPOC lives in the descriptions of archival and unpublished materials in Special Collections and Institutional Archives. Focusing on legacy finding aids and catalog records and current policies and procedures, the working group will make recommendations to address and rectify racist and biased language, and to promote anti-racist descriptive practices moving forward.

The Beauty and History of Nea Paphos
Located just south of Turkey and west of Syria, Cyprus has been a historic and cultural crossroads for over two millennia. Nea Paphos is at the southwest part of the island and played a role in the ancient history of Persia, Greece, the Roman Empire, early Christianity, and much more. Its best-known features are mosaic pavements that decorate many of the buildings at the site. Nea Paphos is also the focus of one of the Getty Conservation Institute’s latest international projects, a partnership with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus that will provide more protection and conservation for the site. This joint project will conserve the site’s mosaics and architectural remains, manage and inform visitors about the site’s importance, protect its environmental features, and much more. Discover the history and importance of Nea Paphos and check out some gorgeous photos of the site on the Iris.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Creativity Begins at Home
While spending more time at home, staff have discovered fascinating ways to entertain themselves and give back to their communities. To share how you’ve been passing the time, email internalcommunications@getty.edu.
- Genevieve Smith, Imaging Technician, Getty Digital: “Ever-curious and loving any chance to dive into history, I love processing collections. I reached out to my local Skateboarding Museum (SHOF) and offered to help with their skate magazine collection in my spare time, as I heard it might need a little love. I'm able to do much of it from home, with short & careful weekly visits, making a master-list of mags they have, what they're missing, anything noteworthy curatorially (some cool Farrah Fawcett and Lance Mountain gems in there!), and anything that could be digitized. Lately, I've been going through Thrasher magazine in the early '80s, and the American punk scene has been vibrantly brought to life for me! The magazines are mostly the result of a private collector, so I have user and researcher outreach in the back of my mind as I get a handle on the collection, and how it may serve reaching a wider audience! (Although they have a pretty great following!) It's been a fun project and collaboration in my downtime. Check out their vibe at Skateboarding Hall of Fame and Museum.”
