Thomas Demand's Pacific Sun

The GRI presents a conversation between artist Thomas Demand, film director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Professor Michael Fried, and GRI Director Thomas W. Gaehtgens about Demand's 100-second animated film Pacific Sun. Speakers explore the intersections of photography and film, art and memory, and aesthetics and technology.

The Getty Research Journal publishes original scholarship drawn from the Getty's extensive archival, art, and rare book collections. This issue features essays on religious architecture in colonial Oaxaca, 18th-century prints by Maria Sibylla Merian, a back-alley store run by Fluxus artists in the 1960s, and other groundbreaking research.

Modern Art in Los Angeles: Frank Gehry and the Los Angeles Art Scene

Frank Gehry's distinctive vision of architecture was shaped in part by his many exchanges with visual artists. Gehry recently met at the Getty Center with close collaborators and friends—Peter Alexander, Chuck Arnoldi, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Tony Berlant, and Ed Moses—to reflect on their formative years in the Los Angeles art scene.

  AAT record for "amber" with newly published Chinese translations

Thousands of Chinese Terms Added to Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)

More than 3,000 records in the AAT now include Chinese-language equivalent terms, plus descriptive notes and bibliographic citations in Chinese. The GRI continues to work with the Taiwan E-Learning & Digital Archives Program to complete full translations of nearly 35,000 AAT records into Chinese.

Design Firm in Paris: Carlhian Records

The Carlhian Records, 1867–1975, document the remarkable development of a Paris-based decorating firm that acquired and produced furniture, ornate woodwork (boiserie), and wallpaper sets. This archive includes blueprints, 15,000 photographs, fabric samples, and operation records for Carlhian's offices in Paris, London, New York, and Buenos Aires.

Manuscript of Nuremberg Carnival Processions

Bound in a parchment leaf featuring musical notations and a prayer, the Schembard Büch is a hand-colored manuscript that focuses on masked festival runners (Läufer) and their activities during civic festivals of Nuremberg. More than 60 full-page watercolors depict vignettes of costumed participants and decorated floats in carnival processions from 1449 to 1539.

Greetings from L.A.: Artists and Publics, 1950–1980

The hugely successful GRI exhibition that ARTINFO called a "sleeper hit" from "one of the most smartly curated small spaces in America" travels this month to the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, along with the Getty exhibition Pacific Standard Time: Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950–1970. With more than 200 rare photographs, artists' books, posters, postcards, invitations, and letters, Greetings from L.A. tells the story of how California artists developed innovative strategies for reaching diverse publics.
