Grant Period: March 2010–December 2011

As a result of this grant, a group of art librarians and art historians from the United States and Europe held a two-day meeting in New York City in March 2010 to discuss the Future of Art Bibliography (FAB). This meeting resulted in the Getty Research Portal™, an online resource that offers complete versions of canonical art history texts, rare books, and related literature. These resources have traditionally been difficult, if not impossible, to find because they reside at the websites of multiple institutions and are largely undiscoverable on Google Books or Google Scholar. Initial contributors to the project include the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library at Columbia University, the Biblioteca de la Universidad de Málaga, the Frick Art Reference Library, the Getty Research Institute, the Heidelberg University Library, the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In the future, this model can be extended to include other institutions as well as to create opportunities for new kinds of scholarly communities and methods to share and annotate texts, to develop new research tools, to link to images, and to produce translations and critical editions. This resource also helps countries without major art libraries gain access to fundamental art history texts.
