Penned with grim humor, the Futurist artist and writer Marinetti's brief illustrated texts describe the sounds of war: the "cric-crac" of mice gnawing in the army camp and the "tuum tuum" of bombs exploding outside. He writes of the squalid living conditions with rats everywhere, and black smoke and rancid cooking oil in the soldiers' mess hall.
