Digital Kirchner

This project expanded online access to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s 1917 illustrations of the apocalypse, drawn on the back of cigarette boxes whose fragile condition limited their accessibility. By digitally integrating these illustrations into the Getty Scholars’ Workspace, the project facilitated multidisciplinary research into Kirchner’s work. Digital Kirchner was a significant step in furthering the Getty Research Institute’s long-term goal of developing virtual research environments for art historical scholarship.
