Thinking on Paper: A Consideration of Negative Space in Drawing
The Getty Center
Date: Sunday, September 8, 2013
Time: 3:00 p.m.
Location: Museum Lecture Hall
Artist Joe Biel, professor of studio art at Cal State University, Fullerton, explores the many roles of negative space in drawings. He suggests that this examination of negative space can be useful in thinking about mood, narrative, and formal structure in both Old Master and more contemporary drawing. Using visual examples from the exhibition The Poetry of Paper at the Getty, and other art historical sources, literary examples, as well as his own drawings, Biel focuses on the use of open space as a device in both drawing and poetry, and will consider how the examination of this aspect can enrich the experience of looking at drawings, both as maker and viewer. Complements the exhibition The Poetry of Paper.
